I completed this painting on Monday. I've stopped using gesso to prime oil paintings. Instead, I'm now sizing and priming with PVA and Gamblin Oil Painting Ground. After sizing, only two coats of the ground are needed, with light sanding between coats. The downside is the ground takes a while to dry, longer than acrylic gesso. However, the ground gives a softer-looking, more appealing texture. It's almost buttery. I don't know how else to describe it.
