Sunday at Elizabeth Bay, Tortola....Photos by Jonathan Clayton

While relaxing in the sea Sunday afternoon, I became aware of the lines of light reflections on the surface and in the sand below. Line is usually the first element of design taught in art school. In previous color explorations, I've almost ignored line. That is to say, I haven't utilized it much, choosing instead to focus on color, shape and space. And now, line factors into some new work- gouaches and pen drawings. Perhaps my desire to explore line, the most basic element, is metaphorical- fresh beginnings, new opportunities and the journey of discovery.
