texas life | eckert james river bat cave preserve

We had a chance to visit Eckert James River Bat Cave Preserve in the Hill Country near Mason, Texas. This cave is the summer home for about 4 million Mexican free-tailed bats. It is one of the largest bat nurseries in the US, and one of about 100 maternity caves in the world.
Every evening after sundown the adult females emerge on their hunt for insects. We witnessed this amazing spectacle for about an hour until complete darkness.
I first learned of the Eckert James River Bat Cave Preserve on The Nature Conservancy website.
